Fractured Strings | Spitfire Audio

Early on in the process of scoring Frozen Planet II, composers James and Adam worked closely with industry-leading soundsmiths Spitfire Audio to develop a collection of creative short articulations, designed to capture the beautiful complexity of frozen forms. Looking at changing states of matter, the splintering of ice and the individuality of snowflakes, the team worked closely with London’s best players to represent natural phenomena in musical performances.

From macro photography of frozen lake beds, to vast ice sheets collapsing with immense force, a documentary like Frozen Planet II presents scale of both extremes. To reflect this, Fractured Strings was recorded with small sections in the vast acoustic space of the Hall at AIR Studios, London - capturing the delicacy and nuance of each player’s performance, yet with a vastness to mirror that of the natural world.

From the most fragile of Splinters, to the most passionate of Fractures, each articulation was carefully sculpted with great dynamic range, as the section was conducted like an organic synthesizer - fine tuning the balance of players and blending harmonics, sul pont, and sul tasto on a note-by-note basis, for a reimagined take on textural strings.

Fractured Strings is available now from Spitfire Audio.
